Resident Firefighter
Resident Firefighter Program

Under this program, students live in CAL FIRE/TCFD Fire Stations while attending college and responding to calls in the evenings and weekends. There is a small compensation given for shift work and for responding to calls. The average number of Resident Firefighters is usually between 10 and 15 and most usually find permanent employment after two or three winters.

JOB DEFINITION:
Under the direction of a Station Officer, to provide supplemental staffing for an engine company; to participate in fire and rescue training; to perform related work as assigned. Works 11 to 22 hours per week depending on shift schedule.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Responds to a wide variety of emergency calls; Participates in daily training assignments; Performs a variety of support duties while in the fire station including, but not limited to station housekeeping, building/grounds maintenance, engine and equipment maintenance, public information, and telephone reception; May work on related station projects at the direction of company officer.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of: Basic firefighting and other emergency response techniques. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and/or first responder practices and techniques.

Skill in: Applying learned safety techniques. Working effectively as a member of a team in the performance of duties.

Ability to: Meet the physical standards of the job, which include lifting and moving items weighing near 100 pounds over a distance of fifty yards or more, performing long periods of arduous work with little rest at the scene of an emergency, and any other essential function of the job.

A typical way of gaining the knowledge and skills outlined above is:
Enrollment in or completion of a vocational firefighting program or training and service as a volunteer firefighter.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess a valid California Driver’s License and have a satisfactory driving record and must be willing to respond to emergency conditions during off hours as necessary.
